Early in month of Elul in 2025 (Jewish year 5785)—a time of reflection and spiritual preparation for the renewal performed during the imminent High Holidays; a shift in the Jewish calendar, in the local seasons, and in day-to-day secular schedules—I threw the I Ching with the question, “Now that I see myself achieving some of my health and career goals, how can I sustain the momentum and make good use of it?” The resulting hexagram was Ta Chuang, rendered as “The Power of the Great” by an English retranslation of Richard Wilhelm’s classic German translation of the I Ching.

One who fixes the mind on both what is right and what is possible grasps
the wave of the creative that rises and thunders across heaven with sculpted
hands on the fixtures of a ground laid out and patterned with care, love, the
propitious tracing of an ongoing life whose terminus has not been dictated
